Compare two periods. The ice kept the numbers.

The ice ledger compares two observed averages for the world’s glaciers: 231 billion tonnes of ice lost per year in 2000–2011, and 314 billion tonnes per year in 2012–2023. The later average is about 36% higher.

These are period averages, not live readings, and they exclude the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Glacier loss also affects freshwater supplies, not just sea level. Source: the GlaMBIE study, reported by ESA in February 2025.
